Rimpfischhorn

4,199 m

The Rimpfisch element is a Walser-German oronym of uncertain origin, possibly from a local family name or from a Walser dialect word for a jagged rock outcrop. The peak's summit is in fact a distinctive limestone tower.

Jagged rock-and-ice summit south of the Allalinhorn, recognisable from afar by its serrated crest. The normal route from the Britanniahütte crosses the Allalin Glacier and Allalinpass before climbing the west flank.

History

Climbed on 9 September 1859 by Stephen and Anderegg — one of many Mischabel summits the Stephen–Anderegg rope took during their three productive seasons together in 1859–1861. The Rimpfischhorn's summit is a fissured limestone tower (one of the few non-gneiss/granite tops in the Pennine Alps) that gives a short rock crux at the end of an otherwise easy glacier walk from the Britanniahütte.
