Hohberghorn

4,219 m

'High mountain horn' — a redundant Walser-German toponym in which Hoh ('high') and Berg ('mountain') reinforce the same idea, characteristic of layered Alpine naming.

Northern summit of the Nadelgrat north of the Dom, between the Stecknadelhorn and Dürrenhorn. Typically climbed in a full Nadelgrat traverse from the Bordierhütte or Mischabelhütte.

History

Climbed in August 1869 by an English party from the Zermatt side. The Hohberghorn is one of the broader, snowier summits of the Nadelgrat and is most often taken in as part of a full Mischabel traverse from the Dürrenhorn to the Lenzspitze, a long but technically straightforward day for a fit, acclimatised party.
